Bar Harobr, ME Photo: Deb

Here is what you all have been looking forward to more than anything else in your life: This week's edition of Why I Love ME!

Bar Harbor is a quaint seaside town in Down East Maine on Mount Desert Island, surrounded by Acadia National Park and Frenchman Bay. It is also home to Diver Ed and Captain Evil who run the Dive-In Theater. I know I'm a Yankee and 'R's do not exist up heyah, but I am not talking about the Old Timer's Tavern in Gloucester, MA, a local dive that The Terrorist told me if he ever saw my car parked in front of there he'd break both my arms and beat me over the head with them.

Ed Monat and Edna Martin run the adventurous Dive-In Theater out of Bar Harbor. Ed is the diver and Edna is the captain of the M/V Seal, a passenger boat in the summer, a scallop diving boat in the winter. In the summer they take people aboard and motor out to Frenchman Bay to the best dive spots. Ed points out the seals, porpoises or whatever other wildlife is encountered as they head out.

Once at their destination, the passengers help Ed get into his diving suit and gear and then they push him overboard. The boat then turns into a theater with a projector and screen, and Ed, with his underwater camera, films the panorama before him at the bottom of the sea, showing sea creatures such as sea peaches, sand dollars and rock crabs. He then will bring up an assortment of sea creatures to the boat for all to see and touch, teaching you about each one.

Ed, a former lobsterman, graduate of College of the Atlantic, marine ecologist, harbor master and special education teacher has a blast running the Dive-In-Theater. He's like John Belushi in a wet suit and his passion and love for the sea screams at you. In addition to entertaining and educating hundreds of school children and adults, Ed and Edna have also given much to the community of Bar Harbor. They are a well known couple and much loved by all. Then misfortune struck.

On November 26, 2008, a fierce storm blew through Frenchman Bay, ripping Seal from her mooring and sending her into the rocks. Though the boat was declared a total loss, the community would not sit idly by. A fund raiser was held January 10, 2009 to help keep Ed and Edna's Dive-In Theater afloat. That one evening alone raised $11,000 for Ed and Edna to put towards the new boat they are having built.

Donations are still being accepted and hopefully Ed and Edna will be back on the high seas ASAP! Do you love ME yet?

Nice story Deb, but I ain't believing Yankees are nice.
But you did manage to get through a "Why I Love ME" without mentioning giant crawdads.

Bee January 15, 2009 11:34 PM

I really do want to move to ME.

Adullamite January 16, 2009 5:16 AM

Stop posting pics of the sea!
It makes me envious and despairing that I cannot live there!

Deb January 16, 2009 6:48 AM

Tattoo Jim: Glad you enjoy ME!

Wirecutter: We're not nice, it's just a ruse. No photos of lobsters, but I did write 'lobsterman'! I must be slipping.

Bee: It's -10 degrees right now. Come on up!

Adullamite: Just come for a visit then. Bee will take you.

Auds at Barking Mad January 18, 2009 10:37 PM

Someone recently asked me why I love living in Maine...I gave my reasons and then pointed them out here for a bit by bit tutorial that wouldn't bore them to sleep, yet would probably leave them laughing and waiting for the next installment.

Although, truth be told, it's a damned good thing I love the spring, summer and autumn here right now because with all this damned snow...

Deb January 19, 2009 6:29 AM

Auds: Where to you go for spring, summer and autumn? Maine has two seasons: Winter and 4th of July.

LL January 19, 2009 7:43 PM

Where are the mountains though? And what's with all the trees? ;)

Deb January 19, 2009 7:51 PM

LL: Hey, at least it doesn't look like Korea! ;-P

HumorSmith January 19, 2009 8:05 PM

Very nice, Deb. Yes, I do love you.

Deb January 19, 2009 8:57 PM

Humor: Thank you. Do you love me...or ME? I hate being used.

VE January 20, 2009 4:34 PM

You know, if you just put the legal stuff out there you'll never have to come up with something to blog ever again...

I genericize it all and just put "photos provided by the internet" instead...

Deb January 20, 2009 6:01 PM

VE: Really? The Internet doesn't get upset if you do that?
