KAYAK

>> Thursday, June 24, 2010

It's official.  Summer, that 7-day season that Maine enjoys every year, has arrived!  Woo Hoo!  The kayaks were taken out of hibernation, de-spidered and loaded up for the first paddle of the season in the waters off Camden, Maine last weekend.

We started with a trip around the harbor....

...and under the windjammer bows.

We then headed out to that famous island in the TV show "Lost".

...but the lighthouse caretakers were there working, those killjoys, so we headed to the opposite side....

...found a nice flat rock high up over the water and had lunch there while watching the schooners head out for their two-hour tours, two-hour tours.

Then I became an idiot.  I've never done this in my life.  I've even vowed never to do what I did.

I threw the crust of my sandwich high in the air.  I know.  What a moron.  Out of thin air came this:

....but he was very well mannered, didn't screech, didn't beg.  So we took him along with three of his friends home with us.

If you want to see the above photos (minus the roasted seagulls) without that stinkin' "Debbie Does Drivel" watermark, you can click HERE, or check out the slideshow below from Webshots.   If any of you use online photo hosting/storage that you are very happy with, I'd appreciate it if you'd leave a comment telling me what you use.  I am getting fed up with Webshots.  Thank you!

You didn't really cook and eat seagulls, did you? Do you know what kinda crap they put in their beaks? Eww.

Two-hour tours.. LOL

Roasted seagulls for Nutjob?

I'm so glad you are having summer. We are ready to be done with it. ;-)

Hee hee. Seven day season? Hee hee. Well you have your seven day summers and we have our seven day winters here in AZ.

Why can't we meet somewhere in the middle?

*sigh*

*grin*

What beautiful photos. I want to move there more than ever. It must be just a mile or so from heaven. LOL at the roasted seagulls. You were kidding about that...right?

LL June 25, 2010 7:05 PM

Ooooo... *slurp*... looks good enough to eat.

BTW, this is another post strikingly close to telling everyone why you still love ME... Is there something I should know?

Beautiful Deb!!! And I agree with LL... looks a lot like WILM to me too!

And there's no way on God's green earth that any sane person would ever take anything even faintly resembling food out down here at the OBX... those rats with wings have been know to fight over dog poop left on the beach... I still want to do the Alka Seltzer thing with one though... one of these days... one of these days...

Great stuff! Lovely sea pics!
The sun shone here this week. I knew it was summer as Tesco's immediately increased the price of sparkling water from 10p-18p.
Funnily enough their main competitors, Sainsburys, did exactly the same at exactly the same time!
What a coincidence.
Still, this summer will last till Wednesday at east, longer than last years!

I got my kayaks out two weekends ago and am gearing up for a trip to the Thousand Islands next weekend. Please send your recipe for roasted seagulls. (I want to pack light.)

I laughed out loud when I read your 7-day season comment. And I thought you were going to say that bird pooped on your head when you tossed the bread in the air. So I was relieved to see that he only joined you, and didn't attack you or anything.

Eva: Thank you! Had to tweak a bit with I-Photo, 'cause it ain't easy snapping photos in a kayak.

Deb July 2, 2010 11:29 AM

Nonamedufus: Do you know what kind of crap lobsters and ground fish eat? They are like underwater seagulls! I didn't eat them. Instead I brought the over to my skinhead neighbor and told her they were quail.

Reffie: We did have summer there for a little bit - it was great. Today is the second day of Fall. It was 58 degrees this a.m., not a cloud in the sky. Warmer now, in the mid 70's and no humidity. I have hair again! Woo Hoo!

Deb July 2, 2010 11:32 AM

Quirky: Ugh. There is no "perfect" place and I think we were just put on the planet to suffer through it!

Deb July 2, 2010 11:34 AM

Leeuna: Sorry, you can't come here. At least not until tourist season is over, 'cause there are way too many people here and one more will send me over the edge.  You can come after the leafers are gone in October.

Deb July 2, 2010 11:35 AM

LL: You would have loved those seagulls! Rather salty, but good.

No, I am not trying to tell you something you don't already know.

Deb July 2, 2010 11:37 AM

TJ: I'd love to see the flight pattern the gull would take once it downed the Alka-Seltzer! At least the one that stalked me was very polite. No screeching, no flapping of wings, just a stare down with my sandwich. I miss the WILM posts. I don't think anyone else but you and I ever read them.

Deb July 2, 2010 11:38 AM

Adullamite: Ah, fleeting summer! Time to get the snow shovels and cleats on the boots, snow and ice are just a few weeks away!

Deb July 2, 2010 11:40 AM

CatLadyLarew: "Thousand Islands"? Lots of salad dressing? Marinate those gulls in the dressing overnight and you're good to go.

Deb July 2, 2010 11:41 AM

CC: Oh, if that sucker had pooped on my head I would have hurled every rock at it that I could find. I was pooped on by a gull before - luckily he had bad aim and only hit my hand as I was reaching to open the car door.
